When they did, only one walked away.

The Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica) is the last lion population outside Africa. A big male stands about 3.5 feet at the shoulder and tips the scale between 350 and 420 pounds. His mane runs sparser than an African lion’s, leaving his ears fully visible, but the skin fold along his belly is a feature you won’t find on any tiger.

He hunts in loose groups. Lions read each other’s movements, coordinate approaches on sambar deer, signal direction to a coalition partner in real time, and defend territory through collective pressure. A male lion fights constantly, locking up with rival males to protect his pride. By the time he’s six years old, he has more real combat experience than almost any other predator on the planet.

The Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) is a different kind of machine.

A big male stretches up to 10 feet from nose to tail and weighs anywhere from 440 to 570 pounds. He operates alone from birth. He drops prey as large as gaur — animals that outweigh him by half a ton — by himself. His bite force tops 1,050 PSI (biomechanically modelled estimate, Christiansen & Wroe 2007). By my reading of the weight data, the historical accounts, and the biological literature, I’d put the tiger’s odds at around 65 to 70 percent. The lion is not an easy victim, but the numbers favor the stripes.

Do Asiatic lions and Bengal tigers cross paths in the wild today?

No. Asiatic lions survive in only one place in the wild: Gir National Park and surrounding areas of Gujarat, in western India. Bengal tigers range across central, northern, and eastern India, but no breeding tiger population exists in Gujarat. The last recorded wild tiger in Gujarat was an individual dispersing male that entered Mahisagar district in 2019 and died shortly after, more than 300 miles from Gir. Because their habitats are separated by hundreds of miles of farmland and cities, wild encounters cannot happen today.

Did Asiatic lions and Bengal tigers ever fight in the wild historically?

Yes. Their historic ranges overlapped across northern and central India until the late 19th century. British colonial naturalists like Robert Armitage Sterndale recorded that both species shared territory in places like Rajasthan, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh. Documented clashes in the wild were rare because both apex predators generally avoided direct contact when prey was plentiful, but territorial disputes and kills at shared waterholes were recorded in 19th-century hunting and natural history accounts.
