The duel between Hyenas vs African Lion
Lions always emerge as winners whenever they battle it out with Hyenas. The African lion is a powerful creature with amazing aerodynamic moves that make it impossible to be waylaid by hyenas. When fighting, the lion normally pounces on the hyena, bites it on the neck before suffocating it to death.
Even though hyenas lose these fights, they are not easy to thrash. They have powerful jaws that can break a lion into two. The grip of a hyena jaw is so strong that it is estimated to be equal to more than one ton. The Hyena will also put up a big fight and leave the lion with injuries.
A simple mistake by the lion could also get it killed as a hyena is not a creature than can easily let go. The only chance that a hyena has of winning is if it is fighting with an old, sick or young lion. Sometimes several hyenas attack a solitary lion and therefore overpowering the lion. However, the speed with which an African lion moves makes it hard to catch it, let alone kill it.

Most animals are terrified of hyenas even if one is alone, because it means there are always more around. Hyenas have a 50-70% successful hunt ratio where as lions only are successful at about 15-22% of the time. The male african lion is typically successful in fighting off small packs of hyena between 6-10 members. But if the hyenas are more aggressive or hungry they will just as well kill the lion. Though the lion typically is successful in chasing off hyenas the more members or more females present the more and more dangerous that pack becomes. Female lions typically will allow their kills be taken by hyenas if the male is too far away. Because fighting them isn’t worth the risk of injury.
While male lions will resort to killing hyena cubs in their dens. Smaller Hyena clans will even allow it to happen, because each member of the pack is considered to be functional the moment they can walk properly and if they don’t the hyenas will kill the weak pups them selves.
The vs. is also misleading. You prefaced the vote by saying a african lion vs. a large group of hyenas. If you talking about a whole pride vs. a whole pack, it’s all about numbers. If it’s a larger pride of 20+ lions vs a large pack of 50-70+ hyenas. it’s no question, the hyenas will tear them apart.
Did you forget the hippo which has 1800 psi, the jaguar which has 1110 psi, and the Siberian tiger which has 1300 psi and the Buena only has 1000 psi

Interesting comment, but in my opinion i strongly believe that a pride of 20 lions can and could out muscle a clan of 50 or 60 hyenas, it also depends on how many adult male lions are in a 20 pride bunch, cuz if its three, then there could be 70 hyenas and they won’t be able to handle the mighty lions!

This fight is completely ridiculous, lion will rip them apart one by one. But it also depends on how many hyenas, and where they attack from.. 1v1 lion would annihilate hyena. 4 or 5 50-50. 10 or 12 hyenas. That might happen. But leopards sometimes destroy hyenas when they go crazy, so lion would probably beat hyenas. But if 10 or 12 hyenas attack in all directions, lion has no chance. You need to specify the number of hyenas.
Even that won’t help, I guess. Hyenas are absolute cowards. if the lion killed just one of them, they are going to run away. They don’t think that they are in huge numbers and can attack the lion. They aren’t as intelligent as wolves.
And 3 hyenas definitely can’t make short work of a lion. You need about 10 of those. Perhaps many more.
A Hyena has much more stamina and force than a lion considering a lion only has a bite force of anywhere from 500-600 lbs per sq inch whereas the Hyena has anywhere from 1000-1400 lbs per sq inch. Secondly a Hyena will never take on a lioness or a lion if the odds aren’t 4 to 1 even then if they call members to the spot a single hyena can call for other members up to 4 miles away, which is one of the best hearing out of all the land animals. Another thing about the Hyena is its part of the cat family which means the Hyena is the strongest cat in BITE FORCE. Now I say Bite force because they have the strongest bite however the lion and most other cats are stronger with muscles in the limbs. For instances getting hit by a cougars paw is like getting hit by 2 full grown male MMA fighters in the chest, hell even a domesticated cat can give you a small wallop. Lets talk about that stamina part, well one thing is lions are meant for speed they run fast and fast being 81 km/h or around 50 mph for a short distance like a cheetah, just not as fast, however the hyena can run up to 64 km/h or 40 mph for up to 20 miles.
It may sound like I am for hyenas and that would be right I am I love the hyena, but I also know that there are things that lions are better at however I connect on a hyenas level because like a hyena I am viewed as weak or not recognized as much.
Anyways back to the debate. As I quote the author “An African lion” which means the male lion from Africa correct. Well here’s the thing about those to fighting for the most part an African lion will not attack a single hyena unless it deals with territory or its really hungry and even then if they are really hungry they will only attack the young pups because big kitty knows better. Another thing is lions don’t rely on a group I mean of course they will use them if they are present but they don’t work as a team nearly like the hyena considering the hyena is one of the most social intelligent creatures on this planet due to the complexity of their language.

In my 50 years of watching wildlife video, my conclusion is that one female lion most often can chase off one female hyena or kill it if the hyena stayed to fight. Cats are generally your best fighters because of their superior quickness and athleticism. The female lion is bigger. The only weapon the hyena has that is superior is the jaw crushing power.
All animals will first kill at the neck. Size, strength, and quickness give the female the upper hand here. In my humble, opinion the female hyenas only shot is to grab a small part of lion’s leg and crush it without having its throat ripped out. Once the lion is crippled the female lion would be hopeless. I have never seen this happen but the logic is good.
In the video I have watched it takes at least 3 hyenae to chase off 1 female lion. 2 hyenae do not attack because they are too leery of having their throats ripped out. I think 3 hyenas coming from 3 different directions would be too much. It takes a far superior number of hyenas to run off a pride of female lions. I have seen single lions in pride continually charge and several hyenas from the pack give ground. Once the odds get to be like 30 hyenas compared to 15 female lions the Lions may give up the kill. I think part of the dynamic is whether the Lions have had a good feed from the kill.
Now a full grown male lion is a completely different story altogether. If you have a pack of hyenas not yet strong enough to overcome a pride of female lions at a kill and the male lion shows up it is no contest. I have seen this in several videos in the last decade. The huge pack of hyenas does not gather to stand their ground but disperses immediately. Nevertheless, the huge male lion runs down 3 that hung around too long. In seconds they are hanging from his mouth.
It is still puzzling to me that the 35 pack cannot surround and kill the male lion. Regardless, of his might, there must be a sheer number that overcomes his dominance. In the three of four videos, I have seen he is never contested but they all disperse like a bat out of hell.
The battle between animals depicted on this page should be one male species vs another male species. An exception needs to be made for the hyena since the female is larger. If one is going to compare fights of more than one against one it should be spelled out.
The most competitive matchup for the hyena would be the leopard. Neither one is going to push it in a fight because if either gets hurt seriously it was not worth it. Most people favor the hyena in that matchup. I have seen the two in confrontations but have never seen a full fight. I do not know the winner here but I am hesitant to bet against any ferocious big cat.

I am not going to condemn you for disliking bears.
However, you are underestimating them A LOT. Bears are not “fat-as dumpster divers.” Their fur allows them to stay warm in freezing cold conditions (just like a Siberian Tiger). They don’t get “fat-as” during winter. The scientific term for that is “hibernating.”
Also, bears RARELY eat from dumpster, if ever. Hell, Polar bears don’t even have access to trash cans!
For hyenas, a full grown grizzly/kodiak/polar bear can easily fight off 10-15 hyenas (you are delusional if you think otherwise). 10-15 hyenas won’t dare f**k with a mother grizzly. It will take at 20+ to even stand a chance.
FYI: It takes a LARGE LARGE pack of wolves to take down a grizzly. 5-10 are not going to do jack sh*t.
(P.S. Bears can hunt for themselves – not just fish, but large animals like Moose and Bison. Also, their bellies might be “fat” but their arms, shoulders, backs, and legs are pure muscle. Proof? See the hump on a grizzly’s back – that is pure muscle)

Good response, but keep a few things in mind:
1) In India, bears and tigers coexist unlike lions and bears because the tiger’s habitat suits the bears more and also lions hunt in prides, unlike tigers.
2) Again, do you have a link which talks about historical encounters between lions and bears?? You sound knowledgeable, so I will give you the benefit of the doubt. Assuming this is true, this is likely because lions hunt in prides, outnumbering bears. One on one, I think a bear can hold its own against a lion.
3) Also, if lions can persecute hyenas/leopards/wild dogs, bears can do the same.

I have seen Ross Wind’s links, and quite frankly, they are not reliable for two reasons:
1) They are fights from captivity. None of the animals are in healthy condition, thus, they do not provide a good indication of what would happen in the wild. Plus, none of Ross’s links talk about historical encounters between bears and lions.
2) Most of them are edited versions.
Lions are faster than bears, but bears are no slow poke is either. In fact, large Grizzlys have been clocked running at 40 MPH!
About hyena clans encountering bears – it depends on how many hyenas are there. Of course, a clan of 70 to 80 bloodthirsty hyenas will easily tear apart a bear. However, 70-80 hyenas will also tear apart a lone lion too. I think it is fair to state that a large male bear can easily take out 10 to 15 hyenas.
Plus, if bears lived in Africa, they probably would not stay in the Savannah. They would most likely stay in the rainforests.

Actually, Grizzlys have been known to hit speeds of 40 MPH. You should search it up on google. That being said, lions are faster. Slower lions may run 35 MPH, but their top speed is 50 MPH.
You are right about hyenas fearing lions. The lions do indeed have various methods of scaring hyenas both physically and mentally.
But you are wrong about bears not being able to scare hyenas. If a lone male lion can scare hyena by simply roaring, shouldn’t an animal 2-3x larger who can stand on it’s hind legs and is p*ssed off, be able to do the same?

Yes, hyenas do fear lions – no doubt. But you need to take several things in to consideration.
For starters, while a grizzly does not have any backup, if it is desperate enough, it can surely catch a hyena. A hyena’s top speed is 37 MPH, while the grizzly’s is 40 MPH. Plus, bears have very good stamina (more than lions). They can surely chase a hyena for long distances.
Also, it takes a HUGE mob of hyenas to take down a buffalo. While I don’t like to rely on fights from captivity, it has been well documented that a bear is capable of breaking a buffalo’s back with one paw swipe – imagine what it could do to a hyena…
Lastly, I want to bring up psycollogical factors. We can both agree that lion psycologically intimidates a hyena, right? Now, just imagine an animal 3x larger and capable of standing on it’s hind legs . This will surely intimidate even a large mob of hyenas.

I have seen the video of 3 hyenas taking down an adult buffalo and castrating it – however, that was a very rare incident. The vast majority of videos on youtube show that it takes a huge clan of hyenas to take down a lone buffalo.
Also, during the California gold rush, it was well documented that one paw swipe from a grizzly can break a buffalo’s back. Check google please.

It cites no references to back up the “40mph” assertion, which is meant as a ‘warning notice’
& not as a literal fact.
In fact, the Mexican cowboys of the old west considered it sport to use their lariat skills
on horseback* – to lasso grizzlies, & either drag them to death, or bring them into town,
to sell as ‘bait’, for pitting against a bull, or bull-dogs.. & unless the fighting bull had its

I did not type all of that – I got it online. Plus, back then, they did not have cameras and smartphones. Before you ask me how they managed to record indoor cage fights – these fights between buffaloes and bears took place outdoors, making it difficult to record.

This is where you are wrong. In fact, it would do the opposite. The bear’s best defense/offense is when it is on it’s hind legs. You see, once this p*ssed off 1000 pound monster stands up, it is going to dispatch at least 5 to 10 hyenas using it’s ridiculously strong paw swipes and huge claws and canines. The problem with hyenas is that once they see a couple of their clan members getting killed, they start running away – this is why you see many Youtube videos of lions sending clans of 70-80 hyenas running after killing only like 4 or 5 of them.
Also, I know you are never going to buy this argument, but the bear’s fur and loose skin will make it a lot more difficult for the hyenas to infilct any life threatening injuries.
A group of hyenas ganging up on a p*ssed of bear is like a group of third grades trying to take down a 250 pound man.

Hyenas take down rhino calfs, not adult rhinos. And while an adult rhino can kill an adult grizzly bear, a calf canno’t – thus, this does not show anything.
Grizzlys are taken down by determined wolf packs – but only if it is a LARGE LARGE pack. A large male Grizzly can easily dispatch 10 to 15 wolves. Also, wolves are NOT “well below a hyena’s league.” The only advantage a hyena has over a wolf is it’s jaws. Otherwise, wolves are larger, stronger, faster, swifter, and more agile. In fact, wolves never back down if a few members in their pack are dead – unlike hyenas, who do the oppossite.
Bearskin is only torn by bears – not because of the claws, but because of the power behind their paw swipes. Now it is not impossible for a hyena to tear a bear’s skin – just very difficult. Granted hyenas take down prey like buffalo who have thicker skin their bears – you have to understand that they don’t have any loose skin or fur to protect their internal organs.

internal organs are effectively out of reach, if the buff
is still on its feet & active..
Hyena would find a bear to be a much softer target,
bear skin tears much more readily, ( & you are incorrect
about the effect of bear claws on bear skin.. just look
at how they use them to shred the bark off trees,
– to get at grubs, & for territory marking reasons).
& hyena are of course experienced at contending with lions,
who are far quicker striking, more agile, & harder biting

Yes, buffalo hide is thick. And lions need sharp teeth and claws to penetrate it. And hyenas need powerful jaws. I have NOT denied this.
Fine, lets assume that the hyenas jaws are not able to reach a buffalo’s internal organs when the buffalo is on it’s feet. You said that the hyenas go for the softer areas, right? Like the legs, genitals, etc. The problem is, the bear has loose skin protects it’s under legs and genitals. If you do some research, you will learn that bear’s testicles are well protected and hidden under it’s loose skin, unlike a buffalo’s, which are visible. Basically, the buffalo lacks any protection near the genitals and other soft skin.
I am aware of the fact that bear claws can make marks in trees branches and other hard places.
However, when two bears are in combat, they can’t just rely on their claws. While their claws alone could certainly penetrate each other’s skin – that would be extremely difficult. They have to actually hit hard with their arms for the claws to do any serious damage. The only way a bear could penetrate another bear’s skin using ONLY it’s claws would be if the other bear just stood still – but that does NOT happen in combat.
There is a difference between making mere claw marks on branches and actually ripping through your opponent’s skin and causing life threatening injuries in a fight.

Hyenas only attack rhino calves in the night when the parents can’t see well. It rarely happens in the daylight – if ever.
In fact, during the day, rhinos have been known to bulldoze through prides of lions when their calves are in danger. Surely, they could do the same to hyenas.
Keep in mind that while bears are not as fast as big cats, their ability to stand in their hind legs not only intimidates wolves, but also gives them clean shots at their skulls and spines – it does not take more than a single paw swipe for a bear to kill a wolf. In fact, even female bears, who are ~50% smaller and weaker than males, have accomplished this when their cubs are in danger.
Again, a buffalo does have a thicker hide than a bear, but it does not have any fur or loose skin that will prevent the hyenas jaws from harming it’s internal organs.
I have seen “The Great Bear Almanac,” and while there are records of cougar claws penetrating through a bear’s fur, it is again, not common. A lone cougar will hesitate to even pick up a fight with a small female bear – because one swipe from the bear’s paw can kill the cougar.

manifest aggression of the true panthera species.. but not always, since some
do decide to throw their natural caution to the winds, & fight back..
There was a fairly recent case reported from California, where a female cougar
became sufficiently irate about having her stashed kills raided by a bear, that
when she ‘busted’ the bear ‘red handed’ – in the act, she summoned the boldness
to kill the bear for its temerity, & turned the bear into meat, for herself.
A similar case was recorded by ‘El Jefe’ one of the few jags noted in CONUS,
where he also killed a bear & ate it.

You are right, a rhino would certainly bulldoze through a grizzly bear. While lions and hyenas are certainly more agile than bears, there have been records of lone rhinos taking out groups of them – an undisputable fact.
Wolves are not suicidal – but neither are hyenas. When going after large prey like buffalo or trying to gang up on an adult male lion – it is always out of desperation. Going back to wolves – even in those extreme cases, bears have emerged victorious.
Cougars are ~leopard sized cats – and I certainly would not like to choose a leopard to fight an adult grizzly bear… it takes a lion or a tiger to take out a large bear – and even then it can be questionable. While cougars have fought back against bears and even killed them, this is usually out of luck – even the incident which you mentioned.
To sum it up, cougars are fierce predators who are capable of killing a bear in a straight fight, but the smart money would back the bear.
AP, by all means, cite validated records of those “lone rhino’s taking out groups of lions” – ‘facts’ ,
because.. in actual fact, it is typically the other way ’round..
& hyena are both opportunistic, & calculating.. they must make a living in a far more difficult zone

Hyenas, indeed, live with more dangerous animals and in worse climates than wolves, but keep in mind that it is easier for hyenas to find prey in the Savannah, than it is for wolves to find prey in the dense jungles. And the canid species from Africa are not a fair comparison to hyenas. Comparing African hyenas to Russian and North American wolves would be fairer.
Honestly, I don’t think the number of animals people kill is an accurate representation of whether they would win in a fight or not. Big cats, by nature, are more aggressive towards humans, unlike bears, who only attack when a human foolishly provokes them or gets near their cubs.
Let me put it this way: Go on Youtube, and search up, “Kevin Richardson the lion whisperer.” An angry pitbull is more likely to attack him than his lions – yet, who would win in a fight? His lions, or the pitbull? Exactly.
One on one, between a large grey wolf and a spotted hyena, the fight can go either way, but my money would be on the wolf. Indeed, both animals will be in a poor state of health, but the wolf would manage to scrape a win.
I’d back hyena. They are usually a little larger than wolves, and they have the bone-crushing bite.

It depends on the species, really. Any species of hyena would slaughter an arabian/ethopian wolf.
But a grey/ timberwolf is a different story. In fact, the largest of female hyenas (females are bigger and stronger than males) reach only 140-150 lbs, while it is not uncommon for alpha male timberwolves to reach ~180 lbs.
You mentioned that hyenas have a stronger bite. That might be true, but it is misleading.
First of all, alpha male wolves are capable of biting harder than hyenas @~1500 PSI – hyenas max out a 1100 PSI.
Secondely, the hyenas jaws are more suited for chewing bones/ scavenging. Wolves have jaws better equipped for killing – longer canines, more teeth, wider gape, greater R-shift, etc. The wolf outclasses the hyena here.

Yes, even a group of young lions are capable of taking down an adult rhino. This does not surprise me because Bengal tigers in India have single handedly taken down adult rhinos. That being said, the oppossite is also true.

Theoretically, hyenas could dominate larger species of wolves if the two beasts coexisted, but it is unlikely because hyenas are not accustomed to living in cold temperatures. Not to mention that wolves are more intelligent and are equally tough – there have been stories of packs of sick/injured wolves going after bison and succeeding in taking the bison down. The only way I can see hyenas dominating is if their clans outnumber the wolf packs.

Also, in those safari videos you are talking about, usually the people only approach certain lions and leopards – mainly the ones who are well fed. While big cats are more efficient killers than bears, bears are also capable of killing their prey fast – they choose to do it slowly. It has been well documented that a bear can kill a moose with one swipe of it’s paw.
