It is the national animal of both India and Bangladesh.

Jaguar is the South American only living felid of genus Panthera and it is the world 3rdlargest cat after Tiger at first and Lion at second. Jaguars can weigh up to 100 kg with the total head & body length of near about 5 ft 2 inch to 5 ft 9 inch. It is the largest cat in North and South America.

They love to live in lush green forest where they can ambush and hunt its prey, they are very good swimmers unlike other big cats excluding jaguar who is also very good swimmer.

Bengal Tiger vs Jaguar Comparison

Bengal Tiger vs Jaguar Comparison

Jaguars are found in central and South America especially in Mexico, Brazil and Peru. Like tigers, Jaguars are also the solitary hunters who love to hunt and live alone in the jungle of Amazon.

Though Bengal tiger has the advantage of weight and length over South American Jaguar but still American jaguar has some advantage over Bengal tiger that jaguar can climb the tree like leopard which Bengal tiger can’t do.

Bengal tiger feed on chital, wild pigs, gaur, water buffalo, Nilgai, wild boar and they also feed on small mammals like porcupines, hares and goat & on the other hand American jaguar feed on adult caiman, pig, tapir, large rodent, cattle, ungulate, capybaras and fox etc.

Now let’s compare tiger and jaguar physical measurement, diet and habitat in given below table on compare Bengal tiger vs Jaguar.

According to size and weight Bengal tiger is far stronger than American jaguar, Bengal tiger is also very intelligent than jaguar because of larger cranial volume and brain. Looking at the prey both jaguar and Bengal tiger feed on dangerous animals, Jaguar also feed on other natural predators like wolf, fox, caiman, anaconda and alligator in Central & Southern America on the other side Bengal tiger is also known for killing other natural predators like Leopard (very much similar to jaguar), Bear and wolf. Knowing this you can sense how dangerous Bengal Tiger is.

Both Tiger and Jaguar are the world most dangerous and fiercer wild cats including lion, cheetah, cougar and Leopard. Both can kill his prey with one single bite but due to over heavy size and weight Bengal tiger always has the upper hand over jaguar.

Head to Head Fight:

If there is a head to head fight between Bengal Tiger and jaguar then there is the 100% chance of Bengal Tiger winning but unlike others, jaguar can escape from tiger because it can climb the tree and also swim in water.

Bengal tiger vs Jaguar is a very interesting fight. Tiger is bigger and stronger but the jaguar is faster and more agile.SO I will say it can go either ways in a fight between this two carnivores..

Tigers bite force is 1050 psi, Jaguar bite force is 2,000psi, only behind, bears,,alligators and crocs. Tiger outweighs a Jaguar about 25-275 pounds. Jaguars are smaller but faster can swim and climb trees. Tigers are my favorite animals but in a 1 on 1 a Jaguar would win a fight, kill the Tiger or run away.

dude can tiger but through skull or turtle shell? NO ONLY JAGUAR BECAUSE JAGUAR HAS STRONGEST BITE FORCE FOOL but I think Tiger would win because it’s stronger or larger but the Jag would give it a run for it’s money and put up a great fight, even though Jag is my favorite animal I have no problem admitting it would lose

          4. Ask ypurself

First of all, jaguar’s bite force is 2000 psi but the tiger’s bite force is 1,050 psi . Jaguars use a a technique which is crushing the skull of it’s prey with ONE bite so no doubt that the jaguar will kill the tiger.

          5. william

get your facts straight man jaguars actually have the strongest bite of any mammal and not just for size there is no other big cat that is able to bite directly through bone that’s why lion, tigers, leopards, cheetahs, and cougars go fro the unprotected throat while jaguars either go for a direct bite for the skull or will just try and completely sever the vertebrae in spine.

          6. Lion heart 07

Tiger’s biteforce is strong but a Jaguar’s biteforce will still be stronger than that of tiger, even if the jaguar is small.

Both are exceptionally well armed killers with the most powerful jaws of the Big Cats and with an ability to swim well they hunt the most diverse prey including other predators. Bengal tigers are bigger with a size advantage; being smaller with a lower centre of gravity jaguars would be slightly quicker and more agile..

I would go for the Bengal tiger..jaguars are extremely powerful pound for pound with a huge bite force but Bengal tigers also have powerful jaws and are much larger….even if they shared the same living space they would avoid one another, and a Bengal tiger would not hunt or kill a jaguar with the same regularity as it does with the smaller leopard…the tiger would not risk injury; however, the tiger could chase away a jaguar off kills as they frequantly do with leopards… Adult Bengal tigers In the northern sub continent can weigh over 250kg and are the top predator in their environment; only huge packs of wild dholes, the indian wild dog, and humans with guns are a threat to them.

I agree with almost all things you have mentioned. But the only thing I disagree with you is that a Tiger will be able to chase away an adult Jaguar from its kill. An adult healthy Jaguar will most probably fight with a Tiger if it tries to steal its prey.

As any of these animals can kill with a single bite in the head, the bigger size only makes it a larger target. I believe that the Jaguar’s climbing skills for ambushes are much more important here.

Bengal Tiger of course. Pound for pound, Jaguar is extremely powerful, but the tiger is built to be stronger intelligent. Bite force of jaguar is more but they are dominated by sheer mass and power of the tiger. And Bengal tigers are different than other tigers. They keep up their strength by regularly climbing the straightest and tallest of trees, swimming and hunting adult elephants occasionally.

The forest department confirms several same instances . I am from that state . So I can confirm you the news . Not even lions thinks about attacking elephants . This shows that they are too strong and fierce . They will take down anything infront it them . Not to forget that they are the biggest and most intelligent in the cat family . They can also swim and climb trees . They are only cats which can even fight by the support of rear legs .

I think if there is a head to hhead fight between jaguar and tiger, tiger will have a upper hand on jaguar because of greater intelligence, paw force, weight. But at the same time jaguar has more stamina and has a much greaer and stronger jaw force than tiger. So though tiger can kill jaguar but if jaguar will get a golden chance, he can also kill the tiger. Moreover he can run faster than tiger.

Jaguars bite force isn’t stronger than Tiger, Jaguar’s bite force only stronger in pound for pound. Tiger bite force is the strongest of all big cats. And no Jaguar on this planet earth can kill an adult Tiger, even if it gets the golden chance, cuz the Tiger is too powerful for the Jaguar, it’ll kill the Jaguar any way

This is all wrong, the jaguar is stealthier, stronger, stronger jaws and teeth. A jaguar can kill a tiger. Jaguars go into crocodiles habitats and kill them in one second. The tiger can grow up to 13 feet not 6 feet and can weigh up to 650 pounds not 210 kilograms. Jaguars can weigh up to 500 pounds not 100 kilograms and they can grow up to 6-8 feet not 5 feet 6 inches. The jaguar will kill the tiger in about 10 minutes.

well really i mean jaguar is really a tough beast to take down but don’t underestimate the Bengal tiger, jaguar are most known for agility and there immense Bite force also , it run 50 kilometers per hour, which is not bad and it can climb trees with ease . The Bengal tiger is very strong and muscular and fat which gives a harder time for an animal to take it down . Sure a Bengal tiger can only run 40 kilometer per hour . But tigers can leap up to 9 -10 meters . Bengal tiger can easily take down a lion .In fact even any tiger is 50 times stronger than humans . Which make a 20 times stronger than jaguars. in my opinion the Royal Bengal tiger would not Hesitate to show no mercy and smash the jaguar. HEY OUT TO YOU JAGUAR FANS DONT BE TRIGGERED BY THIS COMMENT AND DONT SLAP UR FACE ON UR KEYBORAD. ATFER THIS IS JUST MY OPINON . LOL

      FK,
No, I am afraid you are wrong… Both tigers and jaguars are equally stealthy (with a slight edge to the tiger) and as far as jaws go – the results are mixed. Some studies show that a jaguar’s bite is harder than that of a tiger’s, while some show that it is slightly higher. However, on average, I think it is fair to assume that the tiger has more powerful jaws.

Tigers can weigh up to 650 lbs, but the average is 450 – 500 lbs. Larger Bengal tigers are ~575 lbs. Also, I don’ t think wild jaguars weigh 500 lbs… The largest ones are ~350 lbs, while the average is ~ 250 – 300 lbs.

Now, a jaguar could kill a tiger in “10 minutes” with a skull bite, but this will be difficult because adult tigers have huge heads and they can also stand on their hind legs which can save it from the jaguar’s bite.

        And one more thing:
Jaguars kill caimen, not crocodiles – there is a difference. They do kill black which can be up to ~20 feet in length though.

Tigers have also killed crocodiles within minutes two. Check out the video on Youtube of a < 130 kg tigress killing a Mugger crocodile twice her size.

And I meant to say, in my previous post, "slightly lower."

See guys. The answer is definitely Bengal Tiger. Did you know that Bengal tigers are even stronger than Siberian tigers, because they have higher muscle density? Denser the muscles, the stronger you are.

And yes, Jaguar doesn’t have highest bite force in big cats. That’s only the case when all big cats were the same size. As far as reality is concerned, African Lion is 600 psi, Jaguar 700 psi, Siberian Tiger 900 psi and Bengal Tiger 1050 psi. Bengal Tiger tops the list.

After seeing Bengal tigers hunting full grown rhinos, elephants and crocodiles successfully all alone, I’d say it would have no problem defeating a jaguar.

      Anon,
Good post, but keep in mind that some studies (not all, but some) have shown that a jaguar’s bite is stronger than a tiger, to ~ 2000 PSI. However, these are only a few studies, and the tiger usually has a more powerful bite.

Also, though it has been recorded that an African lion’s bite force is 650 PSI (not 600 PSI), but also know that lions only bite enough force to kill their prey – if they wanted to, they could bite much harder than that.

And… Bengal tigers have taken down full grown rhinos (though rhino is pretty rare) and crocodiles , elephants are questionable. Bengals will only go after calves, juveniles, or sick/elderly/dying individuals. It is very rare for them to take down a full grown one.

Competition is less tough in India, & so are the toughest of the animal thugs.. lions.

Bengal tigers aren’t pussies. It would be a huge mistake to say that. They are the bravest of all tigers and big cats. Their courage exceeds those of lions.
Normally, a lion is braver than a tiger, but Bengal Tiger is an exception to that. They go about hunting crocodiles, fully grown elephants and rhinos all alone. And eat their lunch in the middle of highways not paying heed to the blaring horns.

In the earlier times, huge packs of dholes attacking tigers was much more common. The maximum reported has been a pack of 24 of those brutes, and the tiger had killed 18 of those before dying itself. It’s not common now, it’s more of a rarity. VERY rare, I’d say.

Lions still have to encounter hyenas, (though the hyena clans may get massacred.) But Bengal tigers don’t encounter dholes AS often as African lions.
However, they ARE the biggest enemies of Bengal tigers.

But, weren’t we talking about a Jaguar vs Bengal Tiger fight? XD!!

A tiger has more advantages over a jaguar, but it will not risk injuries or possible death over territory claims. I say the jaguar will avoid a tiger 100percent and a tiger will do the same.
In a fight between these two ,we have think about the possibilities of both contenders.
Tiger is bigger and heavier /Jaguar is stronger and more agile. …both have a strong bite..but a jaguar either knows how to use his fangs better or his bite pressure is stronger. ..never seen a documentary about a tiger killing a cocodrile by piercing the skull…usually throat suffocation as a lion the does!
I think the surprise factor can determine the out come..in the wild. But in a face to face combat I pick the tiger…the cheer weight and size of the tiger can immobilized the jaguar enough time for the tiger to deliver the deadly bite.

Tiger is strong and powerful same as Jaguar, they are both brave and dangerous but remember that Tiger is balance that it can stand with its hind limbs when fighting and good at Wrestling, it has huge paws which it can use against the bite of Jaguar, size advantage is another weapon it has. Jaguar will only have chance to kill unhealthy Tiger, only Lion can kill healthy Tiger among all cat species.

Generally speaking, a Bengal tiger should win this more often than not – Not just because of the weight, but the tiger has longer canines, longer claws, and a more robust build. Plus, the tiger’s ability to stand on it’s hind legs can save it from the jaguar’s nasty skull bite.

That being said, if the jaguar does get a solid bite on the tiger’s skull/back of neck, it would win comfortably – but that is a big IF. As far as the jaguar’s bite force goes – the results are mixed. Some studies show that a jaguar’s bite force is lower than a tiger/lion’s, while other’s show the opposite.

do some study of actual scientific papers,
such as Yamaguchi et al has published,
      on felid morphology.

With the obvious exception of the cheetah,
the cat family shares its bauplan across a
huge size range, & the biggest cats are
      the most powerful..

The lion is the King of cats however, due
to its recent evolutionary adaptations &
advances – mainly from its very competitive
      communal lifestyle..

The boss male lion, with his well-developed
      mane, & superior cardio-vascular capacity
‘Lion hearted’ is more than just – ‘tude..
his proven talent in skilled combat gives
him the edge over the others, along with

I am not “biased” – as I noted, there is actually
only slight physical differences between Panthera

    James W,
Lions do indeed hunt large prey. However, the largest prey item that a single lion can take down alone is the Cape Buffalo. It takes a LARGE LARGE pride to bring down an elephant or a rhino.

There is no doubt that lions are one of the most impressive hunters among big cats. However, this is primarily because they live in prides, whereas as other big cats hunt solo.

Also, lions are very aggressive and they do fight a lot. However, other big cats – like the Bengal tiger and the Pantanal Jaguar, are equally aggressive, and they often have to fight in order to win the heart of a female or to protect their territory.

I have checked Joubert – and you are right. A lone male lion did topple over and kill a 6 year old elephant. However, the key part is 6 YEARS OLD. This means that the elephant was a juvenile. There has not been a single case of a lone 500 pound male lion taking down a 6-8 ton male elephant. And I have already admitted that a lone male lion can take down a buffalo…

Lions are bold and courageous – however, it is a huge misconception that other panthera are cruel. Take the tiger for example. They are considered cruel because of the British. When the British took over India, they wanted India’s national animal, the tiger to be considered evil, and their national animal, the lion, to be considered courageous. In fact, in real life, tigers are nicer than lions because tigers will let the cubs and females feed at a kill first – unlike lions, who do the oppossite.

Sorry for going on a tangent. I just wanted to show you that it is a misconception that tigers and other panthera are cruel compared to lions.

    AP,
    A 6 y/o elephant,
    that’s still a massive beast!
No bear can take one of those…

& you are wrong about British India – only since India gained independence has
the tiger been adopted over the lion – as India’s cat of choice, & that is only due
to ignorance, & surly ‘payback’ based on the lion also being Imperial Britain’s
    chosen symbol..

The stripey & spotted cats were unfavourably compared to the lion
in olden times, due to misperception of their hunting modes,
while the lion was justly lauded as being bold, & courageously ‘upfront’..

    James W,
Don’t get me wrong. A 6 year old elephant is a massive beast. I was just pointing out that it is not plausible for an lion to take down an adult elephant.

About the bear comment… I know this sounds ludicrous , but if a lion could topple over a 6 year old elephant, than a Kodiak or a Polar bear, which is 2-3x larger and stronger than a lion, could do the same.

I did some research, and you are right – tiger did become the national animal after the British left. However, my point still stands because the British propoganda about lions being bold and tigers being cowards was always present – in fact the British cruelly slaughtered many Bengal tigers when they took over India- and that is why India made it their national animal- they wanted to save tigers from extinction, and they had a project called “Project Tiger” in 1972.

But what do you think about this fight?
I think the Bengal tiger would win.
Aka/Tony’s claims are just ridiculous though, LOL.

      Ironically AP,
it was the British Raj ‘sportsmen’ who largely extripated the Asiatic lion
from most of India, the bold aggression of lions defending their open
hunting grounds made it easier to gun them down – compared to stalking/driving
the ‘sly, cunning’ tiger out of his dangerous jungle lairs.

FYI, the local poachers have always used much more cruel methods to snare,
trap & kill tigers, using chemicals to poison & blind them – they remain a
greater threat to tiger survival than the British ever did.

The jag has one chance to win.. get the killer-bite latched on the tiger’s throat.
Leopards are on record as having done so, but of course the panthera champ,
the male lion, has his mane to prevent this option..

    James W,
You are correct – the British did kill a lot of Asiatic lions. But it is still true, that the British had a lot of propoganda against the tigers. Plus, the tigers were not cunning or sly. They just did not want to risk injury which would hinder their hunting abilities, unlike lions, who had a pride to support them.

Present day poachers certainly pose a greater threat to tigers – however, the tiger population began to decline since the British arrived (f*** poachers).

Jaguars don’t kill by going for the neck… Unlike other big cats, they go for the skull. So if the jaguar is lucky enough to bite the tiger’s skull, it would win – however this is unlikely, and a HUGE IF.

Also, leopards only kill cubs, juveniles, and sick/elderly/dying tigers. There has not been a single case of a leopard killing a healthy adult tiger with a neck bite.

FYI: The lion’s mane does protect it’s neck during combat, but it does NOT fully prevent animals like tigers/leopards/jaguars from penetrating it.

    James W,
Really? There have been cases of 100 lb leopards taking down 500 lb tigers with jaw locks to the neck? Assuming this is true, they are freak incidents – under normal circumstances, it would take a tiger less than 10 seconds to a kill a leopard.

    Check this video out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0ZpWmKWqKs

Oh yeah, it was a juvenile tigress…

And check this video out to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9p56wSzsPA

I was shocked how the leopard managed to avoid getting it’s neck siezed by the lion… Not to mention that the lion had the advantage of attacking the leopard while it was sleeping…

To repeat myself, the lion’s mane does protect it in combat, but it does NOT make it impossible for other animals to get a neck bite. In fact, lions have managed to penetrate through each others manes during combat. So a tiger, for example, who has longer canines and can bite through tortoise shells, could do the same.

The jaguar, theoretically, could bite the tiger’s skull, but it is extremely unlikely.

I think a jaguar could certainly hold their own against a lioness or a tigress though.

The Bengal tiger simply has too much of a strength advantage int his match up. The jaguar could win this with a nasty skull bite, but it would be difficult for a jaguar to get it’s jaws around the huge head of an adult male tiger.

I think a fairer match up would be a Sumatran tiger against a Pantanal jaguar. Both are about the same size, about the same strength, have similar jaw power, etc. I might still bet on the tiger because it would be more robustly built than the jaguar (even at similar weights), but nevertheless, it would be an interesting match up.

Ok fine, lion beats jag, but I am skeptical about the tiger part. Tigers are generally larger, longer, heavier, and fairly stronger than male lions

And, sure, a large male lion might best the average jaguar, but at similar sizes, the jaguar wins every single time. A 300 lb male jaguar would beat a 300 lb lion.

It goes tiger>lion>jaguar. James (not James W.) is right. Tigers are generally larger and stronger than male lions. A fight between the two would depend entirely upon the individuals, but my money is on the tiger.

In fact, in a zoo, a 450 lb tiger got into a fight with a 500 lb lion. Despite being 50 lbs lighter, the tiger got the advantage in the fight. In fact, it got the lion by the neck, but the mane saved the lion. However, it is important to note that the real reason the lion survived is because the zoo staff separated them. The lion’s mane initially saved it, but had the fight kept going on, the tiger would have won.

The funniest part is, the lion had the size advantage. However, it is important to note that the average weight of an African lion is 185 kg (~408 lbs), while the average weight of a Royal Bengal tiger is 222 kg (~490 lbs). If a tiger in a zoo could best a lion 50 lbs heavier, a tiger with a weight advantage of ~82 lbs would certainly be able to do the same.

A Jaguar would obviously win! It has twice the bite force of a lion. And the Jaguar is faster than the tiger too. All of these facts are powerful ways a Jaguar can beat a Tiger. Plus a Jaguars nite force is the 2 strongest watch 1350 PSI. And Tiger 1250 PSI.

All those South American pussies don’t know anything about Asian Tigers.. Jaguar no doubt is a formidable beast but Tiger is even more formidable. It is d largest cat, it can live in cold Siberia to swamps of S.E. Asia. It kills crocodile which is much much bigger than caiman which the Jaguar kills. It kills largest cattle the Gaur. It kills d fast animals like leopard. It kills bear occasionally for food in Siberia. It even kills sub adult elephant & rhino. Seriously who put this nonsense questions. Average tiger will always kill an average Jaguar with 100% kill rate. One paw swipe or a bite from a tiger & Jaguar will R.I.P.

People have mentioned that Jaguars can swim, well Tigers can also swim. Look it up, there’s pictures on the web. A Tiger would beat a Jaguar, no doubt. There’s also videos on the web showing a Tiger beating a Lion in a fight. Tigers rule the Big Cat world!

Imho you can’t put animals on a line and say that a tiger is in front of almost all animals as a top predator so anything before it on that line would never win in a fight. It’s more complicated than that. Also what’s fascinating about lions is that they are not solo hunters while also being among the three most capable big cats.

I would say a Jaguar has a chance to kill the tiger but I really don’t know how it would play out as far as being over in seconds or more drawn out. Would the tiger’s superior strength be a dominant factor or would the jaguar bite a chunk out of the tiger’s head or spine and it would be over.

Certainly tigers have taken out larger and slower animals which is impressive but it’s like an MMA match up. Just because fighter A took down tighter B while fighter C cannot take down fighter B that does not mean fighter C could never take down fighter A.

^Yeah, I doubt the jaguar would be able to wrap its jaws around the huge head or massive back of an adult male tiger. Its jaw gape simply isn’t large enough.
Even if the jaguar is able to magically gain control, it won’t be able to effectively subdue the tiger and apply the killing bite, as it isn’t large or powerful enough to do so.
A single well-placed bite or paw swipe from an adult male tiger would seriously injure or knock out – if not outright kill – even a record-sized jaguar.

If by “Bengal tiger,” the OP is referring to a male tiger and not a tigress, then this is a rather easy win for the tiger.
Jaguars are quite impressive for their size, sporting a bite powerful enough to crack turtle shells and muscular limbs which can grapple large animals.
The tiger is everything the jaguar is except much larger and more powerful.
A Bengal tigress vs a male Pantanal jaguar would be an interesting match-up. They are both in the same weight range, though the tigress is still slightly larger and heavier. Can the larger muscle mass of the tigress compensate for the lb for lb more powerful muscle fibers of the jaguar?
Sumatran tiger vs Pantanal jaguar is also another good match-up.
